Soul healer and soul partner
After the passing of her then-boyfriend John Cazale from lung cancer in 1978, Gummer entered Streep’s life at a time when she was emotionally spent. When Cazale passed away, Streep was evicted from the Tribeca apartment she shared with him while they were in a committed relationship.
Gummer went to help her and afterward became her soul healer because he knew Streep’s brother Harry. They corresponded via letters while Gummer was traveling abroad. Streep was first apprehensive to start a new relationship, but once Gummer got back from his trip, she decided to stick with him.

Gummer and his wife of more than 40 years are the parents of four independent, adolescent children. While Streep was more of a tiger mom, Gummer, in Streep’s opinion, was a very involved father who was more laid back when it came to raising his children.
She also said that since her hubby did not make her feel guilty about taking several months off from work, she did not feel awful about it.
It took teamwork for them to raise their four kids and help them become independent. Their entire family works in the entertainment business. Henry Wolfe, their lone child and the family’s firstborn, is a musician.
